inside when it caught fire. the cabin was surrounded. >> there is no indication he escaped? >> we believe he is still inside the cabin, yes. >> reporter: police picked up dorner's trail tuesday after someone reported being carjacked. >> christopher dorner jumped out in front of my truck and stopped me at gunpoint. he said i don't want to hurt you. just get out and start walking up the road and take your dog with you. >> reporter: police followed the suspect to a nearby cabin and that's when the person inside opened fire. cbs reporter carter evans captured the gunfire on his cell phone camera. two police officers were hurt. one is dead, one is wounded. officials focused their search in the big bear area after police found his truck burning in the woods here last week. police went door to door searching cabins for the suspect but cbs news learned dorner didn't get very far from where his truck was found. >> the cabin he was hiding out in, and we don't know for how long, it could have been

sometime, was actually across the street from the police command post where they had been running the operation from. >> reporter: dorner is believed to have killed four people since february 3. he posted a manifesto on facebook where he claimed he was seeking revenge for being fired from the lapd. until the remains are positively identified, lapd is going to keep their protective details in place. they are going to be guarding the 50 officers and their families who are on the manifesto list as possible targets for christopher dorner. reporting live south of big bear, edward lawrence. now back to you. >> how long do you think it will take to identify the body at the removed last night? >> reporter: frank, it could be two days or it could be two weeks i'm told other several weeks. it depends on what kind of tests need to be done. they could use the dental test which would take -- it would be

a little quicker. if a dna test is needed then it will take several more weeks. >> what's amazing is that the cabin is not far from where police stapled their command post. -- from where police staged their command post. >> reporter: actually, the cabin where they believe he was hiding was not far from the command post. this is the cabin down the hill here that he just ran into because he was being chased by the officers. but yes, they believe that he was within sight. if you open a window in the cabin they believe he was staying in you can see the command post. so, yeah he didn't go very far from where his car was left burning on thursday. >> edward lawrence live in san bernardino county, thank you. 5:04 now. governor brown plans to go to riverside this morning for the funeral of one of dorner's suspected victims. 34-year-old riverside police officer michael crane was

killed last thursday morning. another officer was wounded. crain was an 11 year veteran of the riverside police department. a suspect opened fire on police officers injuring one. kpix 5's anne makovec is in pittsburg this morning with what started the shootout. anne. reporter: that pittsburg police officer is going to be okay. that is the good news this morning. one suspect is in custody. you can see an extensive crime scene blocked off here behind me in pittsburg. this is around the area of 12th and maple. now, the man whom police say shot the officer was then shot by police. he's in the hospital in stable condition under arrest. a 30-year-old from oakley with a criminal helps of weapons violations. two pittsburg officers tried to talk to him around 11:0 last night on maple and 12th. he started running away and

then officers say he started shooting at them and the officer was hit. >> very tragic situation. a lot of emotions. we are glad he is okay and has been treated and released from the hospital. >> reporter: police took several other people into custody for questioning. they say, though, that these people are not yet being charged with anything. this investigation is ongoing. they say they're not looking for other suspects this morning. this is also being investigated at the same time by the contra costa county district attorney's office since there was an officer-involved shooting. that's what we have right now live in pittsburg, anne makovec, kpix 5. a shooting victim in santa cruz has helped police come up with a sketch of the suspect. a 21-year-old uc-santa cruz student was waiting for a bus monday night when she was attacked from behind near natural bridges state park. at first she thought she had

been hit with a gun but doctors did find a bullet lodged in her head. she is expected to survive. that's the sketch. an arraignment this afternoon for the suspect accused of killing a 13-year- old suisun city girl. officers arresting anthony lamar jones last week. he is suspected of killing genelle conway allen whose body was found in fairfield in allan witt park. they had jones under 24-hour surveillance after the murder, according to police. the fight against prop 8 ban on same-sex marriage gets support from the city of san jose. >> the city council has voted to join san francisco in arguing against proposition 8 when the united states supreme court hears arguments next month. a san jose vote was 9-1 with mayor reed casting the only no vote. let's check weather. i hear raindrop or raindrops perhaps? >> maybe two if we're lucky but right now it's all about the sunshine. we have patchy fog outside right now but it looks like as we head throughout the day that's going to clear out and a

pole. there are no major outages. only one customer may be affected by the crash. streets may be blocked around downtown. live look outside the golden gate bridge, flowing nicely towards doyle drive into san francisco. the marin county commute is off to a great start. we will check the main lines of the freeway. silicon valley westbound 237, no delay. out of milpitas toward sunnyvale. that's "timesaver traffic." for more on your forecast, here's lawrence. >> if you like sunshine you will like the next couple of days. warmer weather is on the way. outside now we are starting out with some chilly temperatures in spots in the valleys. some 30s there and also a couple of patches of fog in the north bay valley as well as and out at the coast. by the afternoon lots of sunshine temperatures above average this afternoon in the mid-60s in spots inland, 60s inside the bay and sunny skies, hazy sun at the coastline temperatures in the upper 50s. this ridge of high pressure will continue to strengthen. in fact, going to give us a little weak offshore wind.

it's breaking down at the coastline for today but i think the next couple of days we'll see warmer temperatures and those numbers headed up near 60s, maybe some low 70s around the bay area. so some spectacular weather coming our way as we head in toward valentine's day. the temperatures are running in the 60s in the central valley, 49 degrees in lake tahoe and sunny there. 53 degrees in yosemite and 61 degrees into monterey bay. and yes, indeed, we'll see sunshine in the south bay today, 65 in morgan hill, 64 in san jose, and about 62 in san mateo. 50s at the coast. mid-60s in many spots of the east bay. and as you head inside the bay, hazy sunshine and temperatures up in the 50s and 60s. looking like a beautiful day ahead. even getting better on thursday and friday. some temperatures could eclipse about 70 degrees or so toward saturday. looking very nice throughout the weekend but hey! we have been able to put a couple of raindrops in the forecast. that's not until 7 days out in the forecast so the confidence is not running extremely high right now. it's the most exciting thing i could fine in the forecast. >> i know. >> loves the rain. >> i could find rain somewhere down here.

bernardino county. that's just south of big bear lake about 20 miles from where dorner's burning truck was found last week. let's go live to los angeles police headquarters. reporter jim spelman joins us with details of the final hours of the manhunt that had gone on for days. jim. reporter: good morning. all the way from big bear here in downtown los angeles a huge sense of relief that this manhunt appears to be over. reporter: a charred body was found inside the debris of a big bear, california cabin late tuesday. authorities will have to wait to positively confirm the remains are that of christopher dorner the former los angeles police officer turned alleged murderer. >> it's difficult to identify the remains of someone in a building and that could take days or possibly even weeks to do a dna analysis or a forensic dental analysis depending on the condition of the body. >> reporter: a man matching dorner's description was spotted driving in the area. >> the warden who was in front realized a -- noticed a white

truck driving erratically at a high rate of speed. because he was drawn to this erratic behavior, he took a close look at the driver and recognized him as the suspect. >> reporter: the warden says dorner fired on them before he abandoned his car, carjacking another, then taking off into the woods and retreating to a cabin. as first responders moved in two sheriff's deputies were shot. one later died. >> all law enforcement agencies are a brotherhood so this is a very difficult day again for law enforcement. >> reporter: a s.w.a.t. team later stormed the cabin and smoke devices were detonated. tuesday marked a firey finale to a violent killing spree that began more than a week ago. investigators say dorner was out to avenge his firing from the los angeles police force by targeting officers and their families. on february 3, he allegedly gunned down the daughter of an officer, involved in his termination hearing, along with the woman's fiance. last week the fugitive fired on four police officers in two different encounters killing one. >> reporter: police here say they will leave no stone

unturned trying to find anyone who may have assisted dorner while he was on the run from police. frank and michelle, back to you. >> can you tell us, jim, the mood of not only up there near big bear but down there in l.a. and the police department? are they breathing a sigh of relief despite the fact they haven't identified this guy yet? >> reporter: a lot of relief. the police officers we spoke with this morning said they feel great knowing that this guy won't hurt anybody else, that he is off the streets. but far from a sense of elation. remember, two police officers were killed and the daughter of a former police officer and her fiance killed, huge toll here from this manhunt but they are definitely glad that it appears that it's over. >> back to you. i imagine it's somber mood with law enforcement. jim spellman live in los angeles, thank you. cbs reporter carter evans was right next to police when the final shootout began. [ gunfire ] >> authorities have told us we need to stay low for our safety. moments ago we were caught in the middle of this gun between christopher dorner and authorities. we are told that two deputies have been hit by that gunfire. their condition unknown right now. but take a look on the other side of this fence. you can see police and the s.w.a.t. team just a little down the road. they have dorner cornered in a cabin. [ gunfire ] >> police confirm yesterday one of the officers shot during the gunfire was killed. and, of course, you can find the latest updates on this breaking story at cbssf.com. one officer is injured after a chase and shooting in the east bay. police say the suspect had several outstanding warrants. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is in pittsburg this morning with the officer's condition. >> reporter: the officer is

going to be okay treated and released. streets are still blocked off around maple and 12th streets. they are trying to find out how many shots were fired and they are interviewing witnesses. it started around 11:30 p.m. two officers tried to talk to a man standing by a car. he took off on foot, they chased him. officers say the man turned around and started shooting at the officers. that is when one of them was hit. the officers fired back at hilt and him hit. that suspect is now in the hospital. he is in stable condition and expected to survive. he is also under arrest. they have several warrants for weapons violations. >> our officers did an outstanding job today. they come to work every day knowing they can face a situation like this. they acted upon the threat and did what they're trained to do. >> reporter: police took several other people in for questioning. people were around the area when this started.

people are not charged yet just questioned. and this investigation is also going on in conjunction with the contra costa county district attorney's office. they are trying to find out more about the scene of the crime here at first light this morning. live from the scene in pittsburg, anne makovec, kpix 5 >> thank you. some more developing news in the south bay. a bomb squad is heading back out to a santa clara neighborhood later this morning. officers blew up some sort of device in a home's front yard last night. chp officers are still surrounding the home at this hour. and we are waiting for more information from a public information officer who is headed to the scene. san jose man accused of trying to blow up an oakland bank makes his first court appearance later today. officers arresting matthew leones sa friday. according to police they thought he was buying explosive parts from the italian. it was an undercover fbi operation. civil rights are questioning the tactics used against the man, who has a history of

mental illness. former giants slugger barry bonds is due in court today. bonds' lawyers are appealing his obstruction of judge equipment after evasive testimony before a grand jury investigating a performance- enhancing drugs case way back in 2003. the ninth circuit court of appeal is expected to take bonds' case and rule at a later date. 5:37. why don't we get a check on the weather? >> we should because it is sunny and bright and wonderful. >> looking good. can you believe we're still talking about barry bonds? >> i know. after so many years. >> i can't believe it. i still can't believe i remember all those home runs he hit, either. that was amazing. around the bay area, lots of sunshine coming our way today. a little cool in spots to begin with again. and we do have some patchy fog out there. 34 degrees and thick fog down to half mile visibility in santa rosa. 36 this livermore and 39 in san jose. but high pressure taking care of it today. lots of sunshine as we head in toward the afternoon. so yeah, looks like that ridge will strengthen over the next few days. more of an offshore wind coming

>> today ash wednesday we read our yearly lengthen journey of conversion in preparation for easter. the 40 days of length jesus is drawn do the desert and the temptations of jesus at the beginning of his public ministry. >> reporter: benedict was met with a huge crowd and a minute long-standing ovation. the catholic faithful were gathered in the vatican city audience hall for his regular weekly appearance. the pope thanked the group in several languages and says he is resigning for the good of the church. benedict originally made this announcement on monday. he says he is not strong enough to continue his role as pope. now the vatican is tasked with the job of finding a new successor and leaders have made it clear that benedict will have no role in choosing his replacement. but we want to make note this is uncharted territory for cardinals. again, pope benedict is the first pope to resign in nearly 600 years so at this point no one knows what they will call him or what he will wear after his last and final appearance.

reporting live in san francisco, cate caugiran, kpix 5. lawrence would call it boring, i say fabulous! >> bring on the sunshine. >> you like it? >> yeah. >> i love it. >> all right. then we have the day for you. we a few days for you. we are going to see a lot of sunshine around the bay area starting out though with a couple of patches of fog early on and then thick toward the north bay valleys visibilities down to half my in santa rosa. watch out for that. chilly too, 30s and 40s to begin with today but by the afternoon, frank and michelle will love this, lots of sunshine and temperatures above average 50s at the coast with hazy, and only going up from here over the next couple of days. this ridge will strengthen and that will bring with it lots of sunshine and a weak offshore wind but just strong enough to crank these temperatures well above the average. so warmer days ahead. some of these numbers may be moving into the low 70s. all right. flying out of sfo not a big problem today no delays expected but just a couple of clouds early on today and then across the country 61 degrees

partly cloudy in houston, 52 denver, 43 chicago, some rain this morning into new york. probably some snow showers later on tonight. headed around the bay today, we are going to see nothing but sunshine this afternoon. plan on about 64 degrees in san jose. 62 in san mateo. about 59 degrees in half moon bay. east bay temperatures running up in the mid-60s in many spots. plenty of sunshine there. and looking good in the north bay. 65 degrees in santa rosa. and 62 in alameda. 61 in san francisco. next couple of days, well, for valentine's day, got a sweet one for you. lots of sunshine coming our way, temperatures near 70 degrees in some of the warmest spots. may hit that as we get into friday. and looking good into the weekend too but just to make me happy, elizabeth, i put some rain in the forecast next tuesday. >> a little bit of something for everybody. >> that's right. >> all right. thanks, lawrence. we are following two major traffic alerts this morning already. so we are waking up to a rough morning commute. here's a live look at our sensors. you can see a good sized backup if you are heading out of

pleasanton into sunol southbound 680 approaching calaveras road. three lanes are blocked. traffic is only able to get by in one lane. and again, the poor tow crew that's working to clear the accident is stuck in the backups. so that's why it's taking so long to reopen more lanes. anyway, 19 miles per hour approaching calaveras. our other problem spot is out of san francisco. southbound 101 approaching cesar chavez. the slowing is more minor here. it sounds like it's pretty much approaching the accident scene but it is growing because one lane has been blocked now for at least half hour. traffic alert in effect, possible injuries there, as well. consider using 280 in the meantime. we're not seeing backups as far back as the bay bridge upper deck. this is a live look near that first exit, that fremont street exit. so again it's farther down on 101 where we're starting to see more minor delays. westbound 580 slow through the altamont pass. we are just getting word of what sounds like a two-car crash approaching airway

boulevard in livermore and that's in the center divide. so i wouldn't be shocked if we start to see some backups now heading westbound through the livermore area. also, this is another problem spot we have been watching an earlier police chase. this is on city streets in san jose. right there approaching 33rd and east saint james street. it was a police chase ending in a crash where a car slammed into a power pole. fortunately there are no major outages in the area. live look at the san mateo bridge. so far everything is moving at the limit this morning heading out of hayward towards the high- rise eastbound 92. 14 minutes between foster city and the bay. back to you. trading begins in about 45 minutes on today's session on wall street. futures are slightly higher after the blue chips hit their highest level for years. erica ferrari joins us from cbsmoneywatch.com. >> reporter: on wall street the dow had its highest close of the year two big consumer

brands avon and michael coors drove the stock market up, dow over 14,000 now within the 146 points of the all-time high set in october of 2007. the nasdaq fell 5. japan's market stumbled as the yen strengthened against the dollar. tokyo's nikkei fell 1%. hong kong's hang seng is closed for the lunar new year holiday. it will cost you more for a fillup. aaa says the cost for a gallon of gas nationwide is now $3.60. that's up 7 cents in one week and 30 cents in the last month. and the pain at the pump could get worse. the government says in may, gas prices should peak at an average of $3.73 a gallon. let's send it back to you. >> i guess it's going to cost more to drive around but you have some good news for travelers, i understand, too. >> reporter: according to a new government report, airlines lost fewer bags last year.

investigation on the peninsula. officers found a woman's remains on a hillside in brisbane last month. now a man walking around with a human skull parked an investigation in the peninsula. a woman's remains were found in brisbane last month and now there's an investigation to figure out who she is and cause of death. it all started with a 911 call about a man showing off a skull inside a coffeehouse. workers say joseph carabino refused to give up the remains when he was confronted by police. according to police he hurt two officers as they tried to as are him. after he was released from jail, he showed investigators the vacant property where he found the skull and the rest of her remains were found. hundreds of fish died after broken pipes sent chlorinated water into the san mateo creek.

it was discovered this weekend near crystal springs reservoir. it took eight hours to slow the flow because if crews did it too fast the pressure could have broken other parts of the pipeline. the pipe is still leaking. officials think 75 to 100 gallons per minute. it may be a political odd couple in the making. new jersey governor chris christie will attend a campaign fundraiser this evening at the palo alto home of facebook founder mark zuckerberg. christie is running for re- election in the garden state this year and he is considered a potential republican candidate for president in 2016. abortion rights activists plan to protest outside this evening's event. the cost of attending stanford university will be even higher in the next school year. fees for undergrads will go up 3.5% above 56,000 bucks including tuition and room and board. the university does point out its aid program will still provide free undergraduate tuition to families making less than $100,000 a year. how much would you pay for

in the angeles oaks area in san bernardino county. that's just a little south of big bear lake about 20 miles from where dorner's burning truck was found just last week. and we are going to go live to the scene in san bernardino county. cbs reporter edward lawrence has been out there all morning long and he joins us with details of the end of the manhunt that went on for days. a relief for people in the area and also for law enforcement. edward. >> reporter: i have seen investigators come and go from the crime scene. you can see that the road is still blocked. investigators are just now getting through and into the house the burned-out cabin. they confirmed they found a body in the burned-out cabin. reporter: sources tell cbs news that christopher dorner's body is inside this burned-out cabin near big bear, california. police cannot identify the body yet but they believe he was inside when it caught fire.
